Task 1 (a)

1.0  Proactive   (Prepared by malar )

According to Bateman and Crant in Za Faran Hassan (2001), the proactive personality is defined as an individual who does not get affected by situational forces at the same time, make environmental change. This behavioral character in proactive entrepreneurs aligned with a motivational drive which use to observe the market condition and grab opportunities, keep up their self confidence as well as sustained optimism and enthusiasm towards changing the surrounding (Za Faran hassan, 2001).

According to Bateman and Crant in Prabhu, V. P., McGuire. S.J., Drost. E.A.. & Kwong.K.K. (2012) “Proaction involves creating change, not merely anticipating it. It does not just involve the important attributes of flexibility and adaptability toward an uncertain future. To be proactive is to take the initiative in improving business. At the other extreme, behavior that is not proactive includes sitting back, letting others make things happen, and passively hoping that externally imposed change “works out okay”.

According to Za Faran hassan (2001), proactive entrepreneurs show perseverance, initiatives and tend to take action especially when they identify an opportunity. They have the capacity to withstand on planned action in facing potential distractions which caused by a high degree of focus and motivation This may be the key for why some traders succeed over time, adapting to ever-changing markets while others do not. If an individual is not proactive, they fail to grab the opportunities to gain profits.

.  According to Hillis, K (n.d), proactivity develop habits includes targeting possible problems before they arise and get ready with some alternatives as a backup. Other than that, proactive entrepreneurs have the quality to think in a positive way during a conflict. They will not dwell on a problem but tackle it right away by saying ‘it is time to look at all my alternatives’.

According to Michael, C.J. (n.d), Proactive is an important trait that every entrepreneur should have because It help them to stay ahead in terms of their business regardless of what business they do and size of business. At the same time, they should prepared with a little money if in case something messed up. In short, this trait teach the entrepreneurs to stay ahead and not forgetting any of the small details.

On the other hand, proactivity indirectly teaches entrepreneurs to be discipline and aware of time management. Entrepreneurs who are practicing proactive trait will prioritize their tasks by making a list of what needs to be done and then arrange them according to their importance. This list then used to do the most important task to the least important one. By following the list, the entrepreneurs will focus on a specific task at a time which then help them to do every task perfectly and no clash between one task with another.

For an example, Tan Sri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah start to become entrepreneur. After some time he became the founder and leader of the Sunway Group. From the beginning, the group has managed to overcome three periods of economic recession successfully. By the year 1987, Sunway Holdings Berhad registered a loss which nearly eliminate its shareholders' funds. Tan Sri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah began to take steps to spread risk and diversify their business undertakings. Sunway holdings began to engage in property development, manufacturing, hospitality and entertainment related business. The result of this diversity, he managed to establish Sunway City Berhad, Sunway Construction Berhad and Sunway limited technology.

1.1  Visionary (Prepared by malar )

The key of success of someone is vision. It is because vision helps one to realise what has to be done in order to get something. Joe love (2005) point out visionary as a picture in their mind of exactly the result they intend to produce which then motivate him or her to strive towards their goals. An entrepreneur with a vision also known as 'visionary'. Certainly, these entrepreneurs have a vision and direction to be achieved based on the objectives and goals outlined. They make the best decision and consider the challenges, threats and opportunities that will be encountered.

Jain, N. (2011) point out that entrepreneurs who have the vision know about all actions that are consistent with the objectives formulated by the government in wawasan2020. Entrepreneurs have the vision not only for the short term, but also for a long time which will be valid until they achieve the initial goal. They make the best decision and consider the challenges, threats and opportunities that will be encountered.

According to Wagner, E.T. (2012), visionary entrepreneurs have own strategic abilities and they able to view things from a long-term perspective. By having the ability to identify and capitalize on a demand for a product or service, the “visionary” promises financial success.

Further more, visionary entrepreneurs always thinks on innovation which is a process of constantly looking for a better ways of doing business. It results in coming up with dynamic, better and more cost effective ways in producing ones products and services to his or her stakeholders and customers. As a management consultant, Peter Drucker said in Joe love (2005), that creating a customer is the only reason of doing business that could be done by marketing and innovation. The rest are just named as expenses of doing business.

A visionary entrepreneur consider his or her business as a franchise mock up although it is not going to be a franchise in future. They are able to set a system that can be replicated by visualizing their business as a franchise prototype. The system not only frees the entrepreneurs from having work in business but also satisfy the customers needs and wants.

For an example, Jorge Lemann and his partners founded the Banco Garantia, an investment banking firm, in the 1970’s. Instead of remaining satisfied with his successful investment banking firm, he saw potential in the liquor industry. As a result, he bought out a Brazilian brewery that is now part of InBev and controlled a majority share of this extremely profitable Brazilian beer production. He is now the third richest person in Brazil.

1.2  Outcome oriented ( Prepared by ong )

According to James Lawley, outcome oriented is a term that used to describe a person or an organization that concentrate more on solutions and turn out compared to the process of designing and producing a products or services. Most successful entrepreneurs said that obstacles are a part of the business in order to improvise their business or an organization to a bigger proportion. So, we must assume that the obstacles as a motivation or hint that lead us to our goal achievements. Being an outcome oriented leader in a business, it is important to help people to solve the obstacles they faced in the process of building up their business.

Besides, without a goal people would not have the momentum or courage to make a work success. So, habit of being an outcome oriented person is important as it will encourage that person to become a more flexible person. This is because they will be more concentrate on striking the goal instead of locking or sticking themselves with a plan although that plan is not work. Hence, as a leader of an organization, it is important for him or her to create an outcome-oriented culture in the company or organization in order to make the organization to grow better and smoothly in the journey of success.

Kathryn Minshew, age 30 (2015), she is a gorgeous lady who succeed in her own entrepreneurship field and she is the founder and CEO of The Muse in New York now. The Muse is a development platform with interactive job boards and comprehensive profiles which now using over 2 million professionals. Kathryn Minshew quit her job and started to run a woman’s networking site, called Pretty Young Professional (PYP) with another three co-workers a couple of months before. Then, she started her company operating system and worked as a CEO with unpaid salary and editor in chief with her personal savings.

A year later, her design of the company managed to attract about 9000users and after redesign, the users have been increased. Unfortunately, they did not clarify about their ownership. Hence, two of the co-worker took over everything and left nothing for her and Alex Cavoulacos, another founder as well of the company. She started to call up the team that she has been recruited about half years ago and try to explain with them about what is going on that time. She told them that she believe that all of them will follow her and Alex for creating another victory. She started to plan everything and build it up all over again from zero. Two months later, she launched The Muse successfully.

The failure had led her to the best and amazing achievement in her life. During the toughest time, she did not give up on the goal achievement she was looking for since beginning but continues to have faith and figure out all the problems and come up with effective solutions. In fact, she succeed to build up a company by being an outcome oriented person from the way she solved all the obstacles in her business journey. Hence, she become a successful CEO in The Muse.

1.3  Failure is an option  ( Prepared by Low )

Failure is an option defined as failure is a process that every successful person will go through it in order to succeed. It same goes with entrepreneurs where they cannot afraid of failure and do not even willing to give a try on something. It is better for a person to fail at earlier stage as he/she would learn a valuable lesson from their failure which then twist them into a matured personality. Hence, failures are the stepping stones for the entrepreneurs which lead them to the path of success in their business or any other careers. Unfortunately, peoples nowadays afraid of being fail or making mistakes in their life and thus, they refuse to try on new complex ideas.

Besides, failure give experiences and lessons to the entrepreneurs that they can refer when starting a new plan. So, they will have a better result than before. For instance, for people who want to start a business, they might fail in the beginning, but at least they give a try and learn lessons from the failure they had made during the process of organizing their own business. Hence, people who want to success should keep trying and make a room for failure in order to success in everything.

Ben Huh is an American internet entrepreneur who was born in Seoul, South Korea, the founder of The Cheezburger Network. He owned the websites of FAIL Blog and I Can Have Cheezburger and today he is the CEO of The Cheezburger Network.

At age 22, he decided to go into a career of internet. So, he move to Chichago and founded a web or software analytic company named Raydium. He began his startups on that company, but he did not have enough experiences or much network to raise money in a short period at that time. Hence, he went for work at three companies for six years. One and a half months later, Ben met the biggest obstacle in his life. By the time his products were produced, the economy started to drop.  His company cash flow was getting affected. He did not able to find even a single customer to support his product. After that, he locked himself in the room for two weeks as he can only felt the darkness, loneliness, hopelessness at that moment.

One day, he decided to get out from the darkness started a lot of research and finding all the possible investors in order to persuade them to support his products. Later on, some of the investors said that they willing to invest on his products. So, he decided not to give up on this company but continue to operate it. After that, Ben Huh decided to buy I Can Has Cheezburger in year 2007. He started to build his funny blog empire. In September 2007, he took over Cheezburger and the blog network received 25 million unique visitors.

The failure had led him to the biggest achievement in his life. He is proud of what he had achieved as he never gives up even though he lost everything he had before this. In contrary, he build up everything again from zero as he believed that although he lost everything but he does not lost the lessons or experiences that he had learned from that failure. Hence, he was brave to solve the problems he faced instead of being a coward and trying to run from the problems. This shows that every success comes from failures.

Observant is one of the important trait that every entrepreneur should have because it helps them to observe things from different perspectives. It means when they see a thing or situation, they will observe both advantage and disadvantage of having it before take a decision. So, by having this trait the entrepreneurs can act fast towards chances and threat thus, will not miss out a single opportunities in market. Further more, from their personal observation, entrepreneurs can predict the situation or crisis that the company will go through hence, will be ready with the solution and alternatives which help them to escape from huge failure or loss. Besides, an observant entrepreneur also able to observe the trends in the market which then they refer during design the strategies.

Other than that, this trait also help fellow entrepreneurs to know their customer’s needs which they work on in order to satisfy them. It is because if they produce a product that is expected by the customers, definitely they will would love it and become a loyal customer of the particular product. Besides, they also will influence people around them to use the product at least once. 1.7  Networked ( Prepared by Aiman )

Superior productivity is not just relying on resources such as things and people, but also in social relations among people (Coleman 1988; Putnam 1993). An entrepreneur who owned a successful empire they must’ve connected to large business partners that so they could co-operate in terms of  supply chain, logistic, legalistation and more.

A personal network is a set of human contacts that an individual use to complete a given set of task. In other words, a personal network is a group of dedicated people who are committed to maintain a relationship with a person in order to support a given set of task.

A public network is a network to which anyone can connect publicly. The best example of such a network is the Internet. Besides, mass media such as newspaper, television and radio are also categorized as public network. The main difference between public and private networks is access to a private network is tightly controlled compared to public network.

A business network is a type of business social network which is the reason for existing in business networking activity. Many business players believed that business networking is a more cost effective when generating new business than advertising or public relations.  A business itself may develop relationships with variety of businesses and organizations as they may directly or indirectly affect the successful performance of the business (Hakansson and Ford, 2001). Firms have to rely on the capabilities of many organisations and able to merge these external capabilities with their own needs could allow these firms to achieve distinctive advantages (Loasby, 1998). These partners do not have to be formally linked by any formal structure and may include a variety of players.

For an example, Elon reeve musk had a serious contract with NASA after SpaceX launched their fourth rocket into the orbit in September 2008. SpaceX received  award from NASA as the first private company that signed Commercial Orbital Transportation Services (COTS) contract in 2006, to design and demonstrate a launch system to supply cargo to the International Space Station (ISS).

1.8  Open culture (Prepared by Ong )

Open culture is a concept proposed by the Singapore theatre doyen Kuo Pao Kun (1939-2002) to address issues of cultural multiplicity and the conflicts between difference of cultural in society nowadays. In business range, open culture is clarified as a spreading of knowledge in an open and collaborative manner to others for continuing growing and development without limitation or restriction of copyright laws.

The concept has arouse a new revolution of knowledge where everyone should have the equal information without the difference of social background. Entrepreneur need open culture to provide a fair working culture where his or her employee have chances to acquire information about their company and deliver their idea freely without the difference of position level. Some potential talented might be discovered and help the entrepreneur to grow up his business.

Firstly, entrepreneur must be a man whom can take both condemn and praise.

Sometimes innovative idea spring from conservation between them and their employee. Mark Zuckerberg listen to majority voice. He advance Facebook by receiving feedback either it is positive or negative. In his speech at Tsinghua University recently, he spoke out the importance of human’s feedback in his Facebook company in Chinese words: “You focus on people. That’s what make you human.”(2015) “Review In The Year” is a Facebook function that have rose up resentment among users. This application will automatically show up few pictures linking together without apart the sad and happiness memories. In order to solved this problems, Mark Zurkerberg has listened to the complaints of people and apologized with his product manager. They promised to do it better in the next year.

Second, entrepreneur should be able to openly express their knowledge and emotion feeling without selfishness. Entrepreneur should share their knowledge and information to their employee instead of selfishly hiding something behind. They should be patiently teach their employee in completing some jobs to help them success and improve. For instance, Mark Zuckerberg  always teach his knowledge to his employee even though he is just an entry-level workers working in graph search.

Next, entrepreneur should implemented an transparent culture instead of using hierarchy culture.  In Facebook, there are no such culture, there are very free to express their idea. It shows that, open culture has help Mark Zurkerberg to create a good working culture where they will stay loyalty and hunger to grow up his Facebook together.

Task 1 (b)

Biography of Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong

In 28th February of 1918, a great man was born in Anxi, a place which was still a impoverished country in southern of Fujian province in China. His parent welcomed this fifth child and had named him Lim Goh Tong. His father was Lim Shi Quan and his mother Goh Ban. He has an elder brother named Jing Ya, three elder sisters named Lim Zhuang,

Lim Bau and Lim See, a younger sister which is Lim Mei and a younger brother named Jing Kun.

Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong was a prominent wealthy Malaysian Chinese businessman. He was renowned for his vision and courage in transforming Genting Highlands from an unexplored hilltop into one of the world's most successful casino resorts. With his hard work and effort, he become the wealthiest man in Malaysia with a total assets of US $4.2billion, making him the 204th richest person in the billionaire list compiled by Forbes 2007.

During childhood, He grew up peacefully and had the chance of studying in school.

However, a disaster struck and his father passed away when he was 16 which made Lim Goh Tong compelled to leave school. Lim Goh Tong and his elder brother had to take over the responsibility of his family. He started to inherite his father traditional vendor business in selling vegetables along streets to lighten his family burden. As revolution led by Sun Yat Sen had caused continuing civil wars, he left his business and wished to head to Malaya.

His uncle, Lim Mo Jin had been emigrated to Malaya many years ago and was already a successful Class A contractor in Kuala Lumpur. Tan Sri Lim lived with his uncle and started to work as a carpenter for his uncle for two years.  Tan Sri Lim firstly learned Malay during that period. He gained knowledge and experience as a subcontractor. Then, he backed to his hometown again. Since the safety issue had become worse when Japan invasion occurred. He thought that China is not safe to stay anymore and it was hard to make incomes. Finally, after some struggling, he decided head to Malaya for better opportunities. After a shortly he voyaged to Malaya, Japan set barriers to restrict the entrances of Fujian.

Tan Sri Lim was a man with pair of perceptive eyes to forecast the future. It does not mean that he was a man with extraordinary mentalist power but he was visionary, he could always have had a crystal clear direction about what should be done and how to archive his goal based on certain situation. To mentioned, if he did not had make decision to left Fujian early, he would not had successful escaped. He was clever than an owl, nimble than a eagle. He could catch on every chances hidden deep inside ones.

Many people will remembered his mighty Genting Highland resort, but few people know his past.  Japanese had invaded Malaya in 1942. He worked as a farmer during that time and decided to do some more better trading. When Japanese ended his ruling, Tan Sri Lim seized opportunity to involve in second hand machinery trading and earned his first fortune.

Further more, visionary entrepreneurs have own strategic abilities and they able to view things with a long-term perspective. When dealing with machinery trading, he strayed into iron mining, joining as a partner in a mining company. By using his experiences from his uncles as a subcontractor and in iron industry, he run a joint-venture company which was the first Chinese tin companies to utilise dredges. Later, he started his long term strategies, that is built his own family construction company, the Kien Huat Private Limited. Some have said that Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong was a luckily man. But actually he was a leader who born with entrepreneurship skills that made him a great man today.

Lim Goh Tong is a successful entrepreneur who never afraid to dream and will make sure that he achieve those dreams within a period. He had the determination and courage to get them in real life. Although he was not well educated as he did not study beyond primary school, yet he was not scared to change his weakness and life’s challenges into opportunities (Tribute, 2007). It is not a big deal for him because of his effective entrepreneurial style, shrewdness and timely risk taking which give him a hand in management.

According to UK essays (2003), other than development of Genting Highland, he also have experience in various fields which then builds knowledge, strength, motivation and bravery within himself. Initially, during the Japanese colonialism, he had experience of working as a farmer, petty trader and as a hardware trader. Besides, he also involved in construction field. It does not mean he only go through success without a single failure. He also familiar with failures especially when he worked as contractor. He even faced bankruptcy when signed an agreement and dealing with Kemubu Irrigation Scheme but he managed to overcome the risk and completed the project.

According to Biography of Mr.Tan sri Lim Goh Tong (n.d), the concept of building a resort on top of the hill was first coined by Lim Goh Tong in 1964. This idea hit him when he was enjoying the cool breeze in Cameron Highlands. He thinks that as the standard of living in Malaysia keep moving upwards the trend of its citizens also changing where more people prefer to visit mountain resorts for relaxation and recreation. Cameron Highland was very far from the centre point; Kuala Lumpur therefore, he thinks that building a mountain resort that is closer to capital city Kuala Lumpur would be a great business potential and gives a competitive advantage.

After that, Lim Goh Tong started his site inspection and finally come up with a strategic location to build the hilltop resort, which is Genting sempah. He used the observant skill when collecting data on topography, drainage and soil condition to be used during drawing the plan (Biography of Mr.Tan sri Lim Goh Tong, n.d). Many of his friends and relatives thought it was risky so they start to gossip that Lim is a fool to invest time and big amount of money to develop Genting resort. However, he does not take all these negativities as an obstacles to achieve his goal thus, he went ahead firmly with his plan. According to Tribute (2007), he had dumped in all of his fortune to run this project which means he spent all his savings without earning any income. He took a major risk by selling 810 hectare rubber estate for RM2.5 million (Biography of Mr.Tan sri Lim Goh Tong, n.d).

Besides, he also invested all the savings form his side business such ironmining, sub-contracting and hardware business. He has to work individually because none of his friends believe in his abilities. Despite that, they discourage him and advise him to drop the entire project as they think it would not work out.

After getting approvals from the federal and state government, Lim began the project which forced him to face few problems regarding accessibility to hill top, water and electricity supplies, drainage system and fire safety (Biography of Mr.Tan sri Lim Goh Tong, n.d). However, Lim do not panic with these risks but, make a first move with building roads towards the summit in just three years. Further more, Lim survived six close brushes with death and stretched his physical endurance to the limits as he had to shuttle between Genting project at Kuala lumpur and administrate Kemubu Irrigation project at Kelantan. This situation push him to work day and night for the whole week. So, this also could be an evidence for saying Lim Goh Tong is a good risk taker and he knows to deal with the uncertainty. It is because although he knew that carrying out two project at a time is very challenging, needs more passion and hard work but, he still encounter it with brave in order to let people know that nothing is impossible.

Although he was facing a lot of obstacles and failures during all the process, but he still became a successful entrepreneur around the world by building up Genting. This is because he was being an outcome oriented person all the times by solving all the problems he faced. This proves that bring up outcome oriented culture will make a person success in their careers no matter in business pathway or throughout their life.

Employees are an integral part of Genting highland and it stays committed to foster new era of talents in their business. Genting has a worldwide workforce of more than 58,000 employees. Lim’s employees can rely on him because of his kind heart. This can be proved by the fact that he take care of his workers and assumed that all of them are his valuable assets. He prepared the excellent working conditions for his employees, so that, his employees can work in team in the good conditions and express their loyalty and faithfulness for the organizations. Genting Group promote a safe and connecting with work environment to keep a good balance between life and work for his employees.

The traits of team-oriented also can be show by his friends and him had to stay in forests or caves nearby to finish up their task to build the Genting Highland resort. We can see that he was sincere and hardworking in doing the work with his friends in order to achieve his dreams and goals. Besides, he cooperate with his friend working 2 shift through whole week to cut the cost.

According to Ang W, L. (2007), at the time when Lim was 32, he was introduced to a Muarian named Mohammad Noah Omar. The friendship and business partnership between Lim Goh Tong and Mohannad Noah Omar resulted to be very beneficial to both people. They established a company which Lim was the managing director while Omar was the chairman of the company. They tried to persuade the government of Malaysia to let them build a tourism resort on a hill top. After some years, they submitted their application to operate a casino in the hotel that they built. As a result, the approval letter for the first and the only casino in Malaysia was signed after the discussion. According to Lim, employ a person or make business with a person when you trust him or her. Do not make business or employ a person that are not loyal to the company.

So, this also could be an evidence for saying Lim Goh Tong has the trait of team-oriented as his friends were give a hand and support him although there are some of Lim’s friend ridicule his plan. However, he didn’t forgo or give up because he had some of his friends and his employee which he assumed that they are his assets.

As a next step, based on Biography of Mr.Tan sri Lim Goh Tong (n.d) Lim worked towards getting a pioneer status for Genting and tax incentives when actually the development does not qualify for that. He planned strategically to persuade the government where he told the authorities that the tax incentives not only vital for his operational management crew but also profitable to the government in future which then agreed by them. After completed the project, he gone through another risk where the resort could not be officiated as Kuala Lumpur and its surrounding areas were hit by the worst rainstorm in 1971 which causes 180 location closed because landslides. So, it took four months to repair the damaged areas. After waited for months, Genting finally opened for business on May 8, 1971.

After years of business, the hillside was crowded with more hotels, indoor and outdoor theme parks and even a convention centre. This development was achieved through his assumption that people love more adventurous activities and have fun during their vacation.

As a whole, Tan Sri Lim had to work his way up from scratch and eventually through blood and tears before becoming one of the leading entrepreneurs in Malaysia. Now, Genting Highlands is one of the most successful Casino resorts in the world and one of the primary and essential tourist attractions in Malaysia. Lim's company; Genting Groups’ operates Genting Highlands and has diversified into numerous different commercial enterprises such as plantations, property, paper, power generation, oil and gas exploration and cruise industries. In this process, new brands were created with distinctive names in their respective fields, to be specific Asiatic, Genting Sanyen and Star Cruises. On December 31, 2003, Lim gave his chairmanship of Genting Group over to his son, Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay.

Lim Goh Tong passed away on 23 October 2007, at Subang Jaya Medical Centre

(SJMC). He had a beautiful family of six children, nineteen grand children and a loving wife when he ends his last breath. His body was buried at Gohtong Memorial Park at Gohtong Jaya on Monday 29 October 2007.
